Healthcare & Travel Insurance

Emergency healthcare is generally provided free of charge in Italy, regardless of a patient’s nationality or residency status. However, non-emergency care (including specialist visits, prescription refills, etc.) is not typically covered for foreign tourists.

Temple University Rome has longstanding partnerships with English-speaking healthcare providers in the city, and we’re happy to provide all relevant contact information to participants in our Adult Study Abroad Program. While private healthcare costs are typically much lower in Italy than the United States, we still strongly recommend that all participants purchase a travel insurance plan which covers the duration of their stay abroad. Beyond covering healthcare-related expenses, these plans also often cover travel expenses related to last-minute itinerary changes, delays, or cancellations.

Though Temple University Rome does not officially endorse any particular travel insurance provider, we can indicate a few providers here below as options to consider:

International SOS

International SOS is the provider which previously insured Temple faculty, staff, and undergraduate students while traveling abroad.

More information can be found on International SOS’ website at internationalsos.com/personal-travel.

Check with your primary insurance

Remember that a temporary travelers' medical plan does not substitute for your primary medical insurance. Some American medical plans might cover certain treatments/emergencies while abroad - check with your provider for more information.

Additional Providers Accepted by Salvator Mundi International Hospital

If you would like to shop around for quotes from additional providers, a good place to start your search would be with plans accepted at the local International Hospital (Salvator Mundi). Our students and visiting faculty most often see providers and specialists from this hospital when they require medical attention during their stay. See the full list of their accepted insurance providers below (web page in Italian, but the list of providers should be clearly legible): upmcsalvatormundi.it/convenzioni-con-assicurazioni-e-fondi
