Work by Camilla Hawthorne
Camilla Hawthorne is an Afroitalian professor at UC Santa Cruz. Her current research "explores the politics of Blackness and citizenship in Italy." In this project, Hawthorne "examines the ways in which the Italian-born children of African immigrants have mobilized for a reform of Italian citizenship law in the context of the Eurozone economic crisis and the southern European refugee emergency."
Hawthorne contributed also to the 2009 Africa is a Country project. View her work.

Angelica Pesarini is an Afroitalian professor at NYU Florence and she teaches a course called Black Italia. She co-published a handbook entitled 2020, The Palgrave International Handbook of Mixed Racial and Ethnic Classification. This chapter Mixed Identities in Italy: A Country in Denial. "critically considers to what extent ‘race’ is at the core of the legislative and discursive foundation of Italian national identity and citizenship. It underlines some country-specific reasons why the use of ‘mixed race’ in today’s Italy appears to be particularly problematic and why any actual debate on race has been foreclosed from the current Italian public and political spheres." My Queer Blackness, My Black Queerness
“My Queer Blackness, My Black Queerness” is an ongoing digital project in exploration of the multiple existing facets of black queer identity. It is a protest , a celebration that frames blackness as a polyphony, a genre or melody with a vast variety of notes & textures, denouncing both white queer racism and black queer antagonism by way art , film and literature through fundraising, journal entries & films screenings.
